Chillwave – Altitude Music

Chillwave Releases with Altitude Music — Polo  & Last Light

Composing Polo and Last Light for Altitude Music, distributed by BMG Production Music, was a chance to immerse myself in the subtle, hypnotic textures of chillwave — a genre that thrives in the space between melody, atmosphere, and emotional resonance.

Chillwave has always fascinated me because of its ability to feel simultaneously nostalgic and contemporary. Its textures float, ebb, and shimmer, inviting the listener into a reflective, almost meditative state.

Polo

Polo is my take on chillwave’s rhythmic, flowing side. It began with a simple melodic motif that slowly morphed over layered synth pads, and airy glitched percussion. The piece has a gentle propulsion — a pulse that carries the listener forward without urgency, as if drifting through a quiet urban night or a sunlit afternoon in slow motion.

In chillwave, repetition is not monotony — it’s a way to draw the listener deeper into a sound world. Polo uses subtle variations, shifting timbres, and evolving textures to create a hypnotic effect, allowing the music to support visual or emotional narratives without overwhelming them.

Last Light

Last Light emerged from a different impulse. It’s slower, more spacious, and dreamier than Polo, emphasizing found percussion and glitched acoustic guitar.

This track is about introspection — that delicate, contemplative mood that chillwave evokes so well.

Last Light is designed to blend seamlessly with visuals or remain an ambient companion to thought and reflection.

Working with Altitude Music

Collaborating with Altitude Music was a thoughtful and supportive experience. Their approach encourages composers to explore mood, texture, and narrative subtly, rather than forcing overt hooks or dramatic gestures.

Having Polo and Last Light included in their chillwave album meant creating tracks that were at once personal and universally adaptable. Each piece was crafted to fit within the broader sonic palette of the album, while maintaining its own identity and emotional arc. Working with Altitude Music allowed me to focus entirely on sound and atmosphere, trusting that the music would find its place with listeners and media alike.

The Role of Chillwave in Storytelling

Chillwave is inherently cinematic in its approach to sound. Its layered textures, reverb-rich synths, and relaxed tempos create a sense of space, emotion, and time passing. For me, composing these tracks was as much about crafting a feeling as it was about melody or structure.

Polo and Last Light demonstrate how music can exist as a companion to both image and mood: moving gently alongside visual sequences, or carrying a listener through introspective moments on its own. In each track, the emotional narrative emerges from texture, timbre, and timing rather than from conventional musical tension.

Listening and Reflection

You can explore both tracks on the Altitude Music chillwave album here.

Creating Polo and Last Light reminded me why I love composing in atmospheric and ambient genres. Chillwave allows space for nuance, memory, and emotion — and it invites listeners to inhabit that space with you. These tracks remain some of my most personal contributions to the genre, embodying motion, reflection, and the quiet poetry of sound.
